Cloud Dedicated Server
is cloud good for a social network?
Hi, I was looking a different ways of accommodating a social network. I’m trying to weigh up the pro’s and con’s of a cloud based service compared to a server (possibly Dedicated). How secure and cost effective is cloud? The website should be able to accommodate 2000/3000 people + photos.

Cloud computing describes computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services. Parallels to this concept can be drawn with the electricity grid where end-users consume power resources without any necessary understanding of the component devices in the grid required to provide said service.
Dedicated Server handles the needs of whomever rents or owns it without being shared with anyone else unless you allow it. This will require you or whomever you designate to setup, maintain, and repair it. The measure of it’s success is going to be based on the skill level of IT staff that handles it.
Cloud is usually very secure because the Hosting Company‘s IT staff will handle the security of it. Cost effectiveness is going to be an issue since pictures can eat up bandwidth and some of these services bill in this method plus the monthly base fee. The main advantages of cloud services is downtown, it should be minimized since the services provided is usually visualized.
Since you’re asking the question on what should be your choice, I’m assuming you didn’t have anyone else to ask within your group so you’re going to have to go with cloud services. Unless you’re willing to dedicate some time to learn how to setup and run a server, cloud is your option now but you can shift to dedicated later. If you have an older computer you can always load ubuntu server on it to get an idea how to setup and run your own server but it can be more frustrating than rewarding.
