Its been bugging me about what the they mean..and i tried looking up and this is all i got..idk if Clergy means a case out from church…or if Spanish Inquuision means like a groupe of pople who dedicate their lives to a religion. … can u help me? im really stuck :
Clergy refers to anyone in the church who has been ordained, as opposed to the laity (or lay people) who haven’t been (like me or you). You can be ordained deacon, then priest, then bishop. Deacons are ordained to serve, priests are ordained to lead and teach I think, bishops are ordained to oversee. This is true for the Church of England and it is similar for other denominations. I’m not sure if it is the same for all churches but it gives you an idea of what clergy means I hope. So basically vicars and bishops etc are clergy.
The Inquisition was a medieval institution in the church set up by Pope Gregory IX in 1231 to combat heresy. Its reputation for cruelty is well deserved as trials were held in secret and many people were tortured until they confessed; those who did not were imprisoned or burnt. It began to die out during the 14th and early 15th centuries until it was revived in Spain in 1478. The Spanish Inquisition operated with great severity, especially under its first leader de Torquemada
