Unmetered Dedicated

Why are the speeds from FTP server on my box so slow?

I have a seedbox (bit torrenting term for a Dedicated server) and it is located in France and has an unmetered speed of 100Mb/s both ways (upload and download) and so I had an experienced technician put an FTP server on the box (so the box itself hosts the FTP server) and so I wanted to download some of the stuff from it to my home computer. My max speed was about 150kB/s (which is my max download) but that would only go on for about 1 sec. The average speed is usally around 20-30kB/s; I am located in Canada if that has anything to do with it. I would please like to know if there is any way I could make the speeds from the server better (as I’m FTPing things to myself the box uploads at 500kB/s+ so I know it’s capable of better speeds). Please and thank you. I use Flash FXP on my home computer if that is any help.

If your box is a dedicated seedbox, it is likely serving files via bittorrent to a lot of different clients. If each client is downloading at say, 20Kb/s from your server, and you have 20 people downloading simultaneously that’s 400Kb/s that is already in use. Same goes for you on your end. If you are downloading anything else, your downstream bandwidth will be split up between all of those downloads. Also, the distance from France to Canada will kill the bandwidth. Even if you had no one else connecting to your FTP server via bit torrent or anything else, you would probably not get anywhere near your full download speed.
